"new". I don't think it's a secret that rubber dries out as it ages...that is what I could see leading to problems with these tires that have just been sitting. I see cracking on two sets of my tires that are in excess of 6 years old and have very little mileage on them. Discount tire has told me I need to replace them because of their age and not because of their mileage. Had I been using these cars as daily drivers I would have long since replaced them becasue they never would have lasted 5 years.I wouldn't use a condom that is 8 years old and trust that it would offer the same protection as one that was made in the past year. Why should a tire be any different? Also, It's not me I'm worried about a tire blowing out on...it's my wife drving around my daughter. That is worth at least asking the question of when the new tires you think you are buying were actually made.
